Bonus: Qualities of a Good Book

What qualities in a book do you find are essential for it to qualify as a "good" book?  In other words what do you look for in a book?  What keeps you reading?  Thinking about the books you read this summer, are they good books or do they lack a quality necessary for them to meet your standards?

Identify the criteria a book meets to be considered a "good" book by your standards.

Describe a good book that you have read and what qualities it has.

...And... do it in between 75-100 words, give or take.  (We don't want a book length response.  Be concise.)

  1. This is Dylan Hartford. To me a good book has to have a plot. A story with no plot is boring. It also needs to have a fair amount of dialogue to explain certain situations and problems. Detailed descriptions of physical features also should be included such as mountains or oceans or even a character's physical facial features such as their eyes. When there's detailed descriptions, it makes it much easier to undertstand and comprehend the story. Finally a good book should include an ending a story isn't a story without an ending.

    1. Dylan,
I agree that a good book does appeal to both your senses and your emotions. What is the best book that you have ever read?

  2. For me, the characters are perhaps most important to me as a reader. If I am captured by the characters, I will read the book. I once took three years to read a trilogy so that I could stay connected to Mara, the admirable leader from The Daughter of the Empire series.

It also seems, in reflection, I like books that are constructed in multiples like trilogies. Perhaps for the reason they need strong characters to pull them together.

    1. This is Ethan Ellingwood and I like reading autobiographies like the one i am reading now, "Don't Put Me In Coach", by Mark Titus. I like to hear how people have gotten to where they are today and what their life was like growing up. I also like a book with a lot of humor. Humor keeps me in the book and makes me want to read more. If a book doesnt have humor, or a harsh amount, im most likely going to hate it! One thing I do not like about this book though is that sometimes he says things in the middle of sentences that do not need to be said. Sometimes he puts random parenthesis in and it can make me forget what he was talking about originally. Overall, i classify this as good book based on what i like to read.

A good book to me has to have a hook the first few pages in. I can only read books that draw me in. Honestly sometimes if it's a book I don't choose, for example, a book we read as a class, and I don't end up liking it, I have a hard time reading it.
A good book has to have bigger words. I like having to re-read something to understand it because I like challenges. A good book is a book I don't want to put down because it's suspensful.
